I left a message for him to take a look at this one.A couple of issues may arise if you fail to fix your corrupted Mac hard drive. LaPastenague will usually post on threads like this. That means trying to take the drive apart.a job for a pro.to see if the data disk can be installed on another drive and the data possibly rescued that way. An internal mechanical part breaks, a bearing wears out or freezes, etc. Internal mechanical problems are a common cause of hard drive failure. I can't imagine that there would be any physical damage to the TC

No, since the USB port on the Time Capsule will only support another hard drive or a printer. I was also wondering if I could just connect my computer directly to the TC via USB since That is likely a question for the Disk Warrior support folks, or another user who had done this recently. Google "SATA enclosure" for more information.īut, before you do this, it would be best to find out whether Disk Warrior can access the drive in your Time Capsule without you having to pull it out of the Time Capsule. The enclosure/adapter connects to your Mac using a USB connection.

The adapter houses the hard drive and provides power for the drive. If you decide to open up the Time Capsule.and pull lthe hard drive, the hard drive now needs to be installed in a SATA to USB adapter. if you hope to use those recovered shells. Or you can buy better quality ones and they might go to $150. look at OWC and their old seagate or hitachi ? shells. That can be one and same drive but you are going to need to outlay some money to do this. never just reuse a drive that has proven to be faulty. If you recover your stuff, you will need another USB drive to recover to and then a replacement drive. over parking of the heads for instance is well known. But drives also crash the heads and do nasty things. so the files are all there but the drive has forgotten how it was formatted. It does have an issue of simply losing format. it is a cheap or actually the cheapest drive you could buy at the time. ie the cheapest hard drive on the domestic consumer market. unless it's something like heat damage which is something I wouldn't know the odds of occurring. A suitable size target.īut I can't imagine that there would be any physical damage to the TC since it hasn't moved since we purchased it. overall a better approach but you need more equipment. Data Rescue copies data to another location. It is slightly different in functionality though. the least they could do is a trial to see if it worth spending the money.

It is expensive enough software that I despise that approach.

AFAIK diskwarrior deleted their trial and so you pays your dough and hope for the best.

There are no disk utilities that can work on the physical level hard drive plugged into a different computer than what the software is running on.ĭata Rescue 3 has a trial download where you can see what is the possible recovery. But to be clear the TC can never work as a local drive even when the drive is working properly.ĭisk Warrior btw is only going to work on local drive. it must be removed from the TC for repair. There is no way to access the TC drive once dead. I was also wondering if I could just connect my computer directly to the TC via USB since I have a port on both If you have a more recent computer make sure you buy USB3 type. You can also use a firewire holder or thunderbolt holder. What do I insert it into so that I can run the DiskWarrior software? (Caddy? Enclosure?)īuy a USB to SATA drive holder. I just don't know where to go from there. I'll see if I can find him to direct him here. Hopefully, LaPastenague will see this post and comment.since he takes Time Capsules apart all the time. Maybe another user can help on that.or a Disk Warrior support forum might be worth a look. I cannot remember whether Disk Warrior can connect to a network drive like the Time Capsule, or whether you will have to pull the hard drive from the Time Capsule, place the drive in a separate caddy or enclosure, and then connect it direclty to your Mac to run Disk Warrior. If you want to gamble $99 that the disk is not physically damaged or the files have not become corrupted, then Disk Warrior might help. You lose your current data on the Time Capsule drive when you erase it, of course.so do not do this. With a data recovery firm, you pay them, even if they can't retrieve the data.ĭisk Warrior won't do a darn thing if the disk is physically damaged.and there is really no way to know if that might be the case until you try to erase the disk and then test to see if the drive will be operational. Unfortunately, this may be a Catch 22 situation.
